How to Give Yourself a Homemade Facial

Washing your face daily, wearing sunscreen, moisturizing, and exfoliating regularly all contribute to have young and radiant skin. However, if you want to take your healthy skin habits to the next level, then you might want to add “getting facials” to your skin to do list. A facial is a treatment that lets you go through a multi-step skin rejuvenating process that involves cleaning, detoxifying, toning, and moisturizing your skin. The great thing about facials is that they not only benefit your skin, they can also calm your mind, body, and emotions as well. Getting a facial is so much more than a mere physical vanity trick. It’s also a way for you to relax and pamper yourself. Facials are usually done in a spa by a licensed esthetician. However if heading to spa is a little out of your budget, consider taking a DIY approach instead. It’s really easy to perform a homemade facial, and it should take you about 45 minutes or less. Ready to get started? Check out the step-by-step guide below: Step 1 â€" Prepare the things that you need â€" In order to get the full relaxing effect of a DIY facial, it’s best to have everything ready before you begin. That way, you won’t have to scramble around looking for your ingredients and materials in the middle of the process. Prepare all your materials and ingredients, including towels, oils, cucumbers, tea bags, and the mask that you’re going to use. Step 2 â€" Prep your face â€" When getting a facial, you don’t just apply the masks immediately. You need to make sure that your face is clean and exfoliated in order to achieve best results. Wash you face thoroughly with your trusted cleanser, and apply the exfoliator afterwards. Step 3 â€" Open Up Your Pores â€" Take a warm, damp towel and put it on your face for a few minutes. This will effectively open up your pores and allow your skin to absorb the ingredients better. After removing the towel, open up your pores further with the use of steam from hot water. Take a pot, fill it with water and throw in some oils and herbs. Put the pot over some heat and bring it to a boil. After which, remove the pot from heat, drape a towel over your head and hold your face over the steam. Do this for about 5 to 10 minutes. Step 4 â€" Apply the mask â€" Once your pores are opened up, use a facial mask and gentry apply it to your skin. Be sure to cover your face entirely. Step 5 â€" Put cucumbers on top your eyes â€" Lie down, and put cucumber slices on top of your eyes. This will give your eyes a nice cooling treatment and will help get rid of the dark circles under your eyes brought about by stress and lack of sleep. If you don’t have any cucumbers at home, you can also use teabags as a substitute. Step 6 â€" Rinse â€" Once the mask has done its job, rinse your face thoroughly. Take your time while doing this and be sure to get all traces of the substance off your face. Step 7 â€" Tone and Moisturize â€" Once you’ve washed the mask off your face, apply toner and moisturizer to your skin. Image credit: o5com on Flickr

Reward Yourself for a Job Well Done

Whether you’re doing a great job on your diet or you got the big promotion at your work, there’s always a special time to give yourself that little extra treat you’ve been wanting for quite some time. Of course, what that treat is will differ from person to person and whatever the accomplished task is, but no matter what it is, the feeling you get from rewarding yourself is absolutely amazing. It’s a proud moment that gives you the sense that you’ve done something great and you’ve earned every bit that you reward yourself with. Maybe you’ve been on a long-standing diet and you have been craving that candy or ice cream or a certain meal so bad. Give yourself a plateau that if you reach it, you can allow yourself the reward of that treat because you know deep down that you’ve earned it. Maybe you don’t even want food; in that case, you can reward yourself with a nice little shopping spree to get some new clothes to go with your new figure. That’s a great way to reward yourself and show off your accomplishments to the rest of the world.   Say you get that promotion at work you’ve been working so hard for and with it comes a nice raise in your pay; this is the perfect time to treat yourself to something you’ve really wanted like a new television or new shoes or anything that you felt may have been out of your budget range before the new promotion. This is the perfect example of rewarding yourself for a job well done because you took the time to put in the hard work, it paid off and now you can get the things you wanted but couldn’t afford before. Of course, you don’t want to go too crazy on the spending spree, but a nice treat is perfect to congratulate yourself. Think of it as if you were a little kid again and you were back in grade school. Every time you got a good grade or did a good deed, you would earn a gold star or a happy face or your test would get put on the fridge on display for everybody to see. Rewarding yourself for things you do is based on the similar incentive that when you do great things, you get to feel proud and reap whatever benefits may come from that accomplishment; in this case the benefit is whatever you reward yourself with. Treats and rewards are what push us to do better in everything we do and to accomplish so many of our goals because we know that if we do one thing great, we earn something we want. So go out there, be great and give yourself a nice treat to reward yourself for a job well done.

Small Beauty Habits That Can Do Wonders for You in the Long Run

Being in great shape even in your golden years may be challenging, but it certainly isn’t impossible. The fact is, aging gracefully is completely doable if you simply develop certain habits while you’re still young. Many women procrastinate on developing small, healthy habits because they think that they still have a lot of time to do them, but the truth is, the earlier you start on these things, the better off you’ll be. Additionally, since good beauty habits are closely tied to your health, regularly doing them will also save you money and will likely mean fewer trips to the doctor. Wearing sunscreen â€" SPF isn’t just for days on the beach; being exposed to the sun on a daily basis can take a toll on your skin and cause it age faster. In addition to wrinkles, unprotected exposure to the sun can also increase the chances of skin cancer, so avoid this by including a healthy dose of SPF into your skin regimen. Be sure to put on sunscreen every day, and consider reapplying after a few hours, if you spend a lot of time outside. Drinking plenty of water â€" There’s a reason why health pundits are always telling people to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Good ‘ol h2O gives you plenty of benefits, and is known to help flush out toxins out of the body. On top of that, water is known to improve your skin, as it helps keep it moisturized and smooth. Flossing daily â€" Do you often skip flossing your teeth? Big mistake. Flossing effectively takes out plaque from your teeth and gums. Not doing it for an extended period of time can cause bad breath and gum disease. If you want to keep your smile bright, develop the habit of flossing at least once a day, and visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. Sleeping early â€" Are you seeing a lot of dark circles under your eyes? Instead of trying to cover them up with concealer, opt for a good night’s rest instead. Get yourself used to the habit of sleeping early. Doing so will get rid of pesky eye bags and will allow you to look bright and fresh the following morning. Exercising regularly â€" It may not be fun to hit the gym after work or to do sit ups in the morning, but keeping yourself active through exercise can do wonders for your physical appearance and well-being overall. Exercise also keeps you in shape gives you a healthy and natural glow. Strive to get about 30 minutes of physical activity 5 times a week. It may be difficult at first, but it’ll get easier once you get the hang of it. Maintaining your tresses â€" Find a good stylist and tip them well. It’s best to continuously maintain your hair to avoid split ends and unattractive locks. Even if you’re always keeping your hair in a ponytail, it’s best to get regular trims to ensure that your tresses keep their natural shine and smooth texture. Image credit: Joe M photo on Flickr

Mixed Drinks to Avoid When On a Diet

Food isn’t the only thing that you should be watching when you’re on a diet. Many women overlook the fact that mixed drinks are also a big cause of weight gain. For instance, did you know that a Long Island Iced Tea has more calories than a Big Mac? Yup, so much for keeping a low-cal diet. If you’re trying to stay on a diet, you should generally avoid sweet concoctions, since they are likely to be loaded with sugar. You should also watch out for frozen or creamy cocktails, because these types of drinks are full of fat and calories. Do note that the above-mentioned guidelines shouldn’t just apply to women who are trying to lose weight. Diet or no diet, sugar and calorie-loaded drinks are not exactly healthy, so even if you’re not on a diet, it’s still recommended that you be more conscious about your mixed drinks. Below is a list the biggest health and diet busting cocktails out there. If you’re planning to grab a drink anytime soon, be sure to steer clear of the following culprits: Long Island Iced Tea â€" Avoid this one like a plague. Like we said, a Long Island Iced Tea has more calories than a Big Mac from McDonald’s. This drink can have as much as 700 calories, thanks to its mixture of spirits, sugar, and liquors. Mud Slide â€" We’ve said it once, but we’ll say it again: stay away from creamy drinks. A Mudslide, as yummy as it is, contains 600+ calories thanks to the combination of Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, and half-and-half. With a drink like this, you’re better off eating at a fast food restaurant. Frozen Margarita â€" While this cocktail may be extremely sweet and refreshing, it’s also blended with tons of sugar that add up to more than 500 calories a glass. Avoid this at all costs. If you really want a margarita, opt for the traditional kind. Instead of blended, order a margarita on the rocks, and avoid adding in extra flavors. Mai Tai â€" Rum, sweeteners, crème almond, and triple sec all make for delicious cocktail. Unfortunately, as pleasing as a Mai Tai is for your taste buds, it won’t do you any good diet-wise. This mixed drink has a whopping 650 calories in it, so you might want to skip the Mai Tai if you’re watching your weight. Piña Colada â€" This drink may be a great one to have while lounging at the beach, but the fact is, it’s another huge diet killer, as a Piña Colada contains 644 calories. Now, just because there are plenty of diet-killing drinks out there, doesn’t mean you should swear off mixed drinks altogether. You should simply make better choices when it comes to ordering cocktails. For example, opt for on-the-rocks drinks compared to their blended counterparts, as the former would likely contain less fat and calories. If you’re a beer drinker, then choose light beer instead, to avoid the dreaded beer belly. Wine is another diet-friendly choice, as they typically contain less than 20 calories per ounce, and they’re also free from cholesterol, sodium, or fat. Image credit: alpha du centaure on Flickr
